Why am I on academic notice if my cumulative GPA is above a 2.0?

Academic standing is based on both your cumulative/overall GPA and your Ò»Æð²Ý GPA. If one, or both, is below 2.0, you are placed on academic notice.

If I do not raise my GPA(s) to 2.0 after my first semester on academic notice, will I be academically disqualified?

It depends. Students on academic notice may be subject to academic disqualification if their cumulative/overall and/or Ò»Æð²Ý GPA(s) fall below a minimum GPA based on their class level. It is also possible to continue on academic notice if your GPA(s) are below your class level minimum, but you show academic improvement by earning a minimum 2.0 semester GPA when enrolled in at least 6 units.

Is there a maximum amount of times I can be on academic notice?

No, as long as you show improvement, and/or meet the minimum cumulative GPA requirements, you will not be academically disqualified.

If I repeat the course I failed at the community college, can it replace my grade here?

No, Ò»Æð²Ý has a grade forgiveness repeat policy, but in order for your grade to be replaced, the course has to be repeated at CI. If you take courses at community college, it will improve your overall/cumulative GPA, but it will not change your CI GPA.

Will I get off academic notice if I get a 2.0 semester GPA?

It depends. The semester GPA you need to return to good academic standing depends on a lot of factors like: what your starting GPA is, how many units you are enrolled in, and whether or not you are repeating any courses for grade forgiveness. You can use the to determine what semester GPA you need to return to good academic standing.

Can I take more than 14 units?

  • Students in the academic notice process are limited to 14 units so they can have a lighter load while they get back on track.
  • 14 units were set to allow students with four-unit classes, the ability to take three or four classes.
  • Students may request for an academic advisor to approve an Additional Unit Authorization (, 231KB) to take more than 14 units, but these are seldom approved.
  • A 15-unit load may be considered for students taking four classes with one three-unit class and three four-unit classes, or if the fifth class is only one unit.

What if I plan to take a semester off?

You can take an informal leave of absence of up to 2 consecutive semesters without filing any paperwork. Your academic standing will remain the same during your leave of absence, and you can work on improving your CI GPA upon your return.
